Southern Cross Pet Insurance Discount Terms and Conditions


Effective date: 06 March 2023

These Southern Cross Pet Insurance discount terms and conditions (discount terms) set out who is eligible and how we will apply the discounts we make generally available to our Southern Cross Pet Insurance customers. Terms that are in bold type have specific meanings and are defined in 5 below.

By purchasing or renewing a Southern Cross Pet Insurance policy which has one of these discounts applied, you agree to and are bound by these discount terms.

About the Southern Cross Pet Insurance discount terms

For a discount to be applied to your policy premium, it must be listed below and meet the specific discount eligibility criteria – see below.

Discounts that we have applied to your policy are noted in the footnote of your policy premium chart, which forms part of your welcome or renewal pack.

Where you are eligible for any Southern Cross Pet Insurance discount/s, we apply these discounts one at a time to calculate the premium you will pay. This means that if you are eligible for more than one Southern Cross Pet Insurance discount, we will apply your first discount to the full amount of the premium to calculate your discounted premium, we will apply any second discount to your discounted premium to calculate your further discounted premium, and then any third discount will be applied to your further discounted premium, in turn.

These discount terms are subject to change at any time without notice.

Additional pet discount

The additional pet discount is available to Southern Cross Pet Insurance policyholders who tell us that they have two or more existing PetCare or AcciPet policies, are applying for two or more PetCare or AcciPet policies, or have two or more existing Southern Cross Pet Insurance policies that are due for their policy renewal.

The following specific discount terms apply to the additional pet discount:

Additional pet discount eligibility criteria

  • you are the named policyholder on the certificate of insurance of two or more active PetCare or AcciPet policies
  • you tell us that you are entitled to the additional pet discount because you are the policyholder of two or more active PetCare or AcciPet policies

How much is the additional pet discount?

  • The additional pet discount is 5% so reduces your second and every subsequent Southern Cross Pet Insurance policy premium by 5%.

How and when we apply the additional pet discount

  • If you apply for two PetCare or AcciPet policies at the same time, we will apply the additional pet discount to the policy with the lower premium.
  • If you apply for more than two Southern Cross Pet Insurance policies at the same time, we will apply the additional pet discount to the policies with the lower premiums.
  • If you apply for a second or subsequent PetCare or AcciPet policy after your first PetCare or AcciPet policy is active, we will apply the additional pet discount to the second and any subsequent policy.
  • If you provide your eligibility information to us at the time of application for your policy, the discount will be applied to your policy premium for the whole policy period for which your application applies. If you become, or tell us that you are, eligible to receive the additional pet discount during the term of your policy period, we will apply the discount at your next policy renewal.

Direct debit discount

The direct debit discount is available to Southern Cross Pet Insurance policyholders who pay for their PetCare or AcciPet policy premiums by direct debit.

The following specific discount terms apply to the direct debit discount:

Direct debit discount eligibility criteria

  • you have a current PetCare or AcciPet policy for a pet named on your certificate of insurance
  • you must pay by direct debit for the entirety of your policy period
  • we receive a valid direct debit authority for us to collect your policy premium from your nominated bank account

How much is the direct debit discount?

  • The direct debit discount reduces your policy premium by 2.5%.

How and when we apply the direct debit discount

  • If you nominate to pay by direct debit at the time of your application for your policy, we will adjust your premium and apply the direct debit discount to apply to your premium for that full policy year.
  • If you change the way you pay your premium to direct debit during your current policy year, we will apply the direct debit discount from your last policy renewal. Your next policy premium deduction will be reduced to reflect the direct debit discounted being applied from your last policy renewal.
  • If you change the way you pay your policy premium from direct debit to any other payment method during your current policy year, we will remove the direct debit discount applied from your last policy renewal. You will need to repay the direct debit discount amount that you have enjoyed for that policy period by way of an additional direct debit deduction on your next premium deduction date.

Southern Cross Health Society member discount

The member discount is available to our policyholders who are currently members of the Southern Cross Health Society.

The following specific discount terms apply to the Southern Cross Health Society member discount (member discount):

Member discount eligibility criteria

  • To be eligible for the member discount you must be a current member of Southern Cross Health Society (holding a Southern Cross Health insurance policy) and you must tell us that you are a Southern Cross Health Society member
  • you are the named policyholder noted on your certificate of insurance
  • you have a current PetCare or AcciPet policy for a pet named on your certificate of insurance

How much is the member discount?

  • The member discount reduces your policy premium by 2.5%.

How and when we apply the member discount

  • If you tell us you are a current Southern Cross Health Society member when you apply for a PetCare or AcciPet policy, we will apply the member discount once your policy commences.
  • If you already have an existing PetCare or AcciPet policy and tell us that you are a Southern Cross Health Society member (because you have subsequently become a Southern Cross Health Society member or because you did not tell us when you applied for a PetCare or AcciPet policy that you were a Southern Cross Health Society member), we will apply the member discount at your next policy renewal.
  • On applying for PetCare or AcciPet, if we identify that you are a Southern Cross Heath Society member through our regular data matching process, we will apply the member discount automatically to your new policy when your policy commences. This will happen even if you have ticked the box to say ‘no’ to the question “Are you a Southern Cross Health Society member?” (or left the box blank).
  • If you subsequently become a Southern Cross Health Society member after you have purchased your PetCare of AcciPet policy and this is identified in our data matching process, we will apply the member discount to your policy at your next renewal.

Important points to note

In these discount terms words that are in bold type have specific legal meanings:

  • certificate of insurance means the certificate providing confirmation that we have issued a policy to you and setting out specific details of your policy and includes any replacement certificate we might issue you
  • policy, policies means the contract/s of insurance between you and us
  • policyholder means the person named on the certificate of insurance as policyholder
  • renewal means when we renew your policy (and issue you with a new certificate of insurance) at the end of each twelve (12) month period, or earlier if we need to issue you with a replacement certificate of insurance due to a change, we (or you) have made to your policy
  • you, your means the policyholder of a Southern Cross Pet Insurance policy
  • we, our, us means Southern Cross Pet Insurance, the trading name for Southern Cross Pet Insurance Limited’s pet insurance business

If at any time you no longer meet the eligibility criteria for a discount, we reserve the right to remove the discount at your next policy renewal, or for the direct debit discount, immediately.

Please note: We might offer other discounts or special offers from time to time which are not generally made available to all customers and which are not described in or covered by these discount terms.
